Chico Mendes Reforestation – Guatemala

Working in the central highlands of Guatemala

Chico Mendes Reforestation Project is a community-run nonprofit based (501c) organisation in the Guatemalan highland village of Pachaj, near the city of Quetzaltenango. Established in 1998 with a call to action, the organisation now runs a community tree nursery growing trees for planting out in the local forest in order to maintain and restore the local forest ecosystem so vital to the local indigenous population.

Chico Mendes continues reshaping the world today, one tree at a time. Lead by Armando with his small team of permanent employees, they are assisted by groups of local school children and international volunteers to harness the power of hands, voices, and hearts, planting trees in the mountains of Cantel and spreading the dream upon which we were founded.

Habitat Conservation

The project plants trees endemic to the western highlands of Guatemala, with a focus on cultivating those most affected by over-harvesting and best-suited for environmental remediation. There is an emphasis on the fundamental needs of the forest for nature, soil health, and water-capture.
