Kenya. Tree Planting in the Mount Kenya Forest.

Mount Kenya Environmental Conservation (MKEC) works in Embu County on the SE slopes of Mount Kenya – a famous tea growing region. MKEC supports 23 women and self-help groups with training and the provision of seeds and materials for their tree nurseries where native and agro-forestry tree seedlings are grown. Members of the groups plant these tree seedlings on their small subsistence farms for fruit, fodder, timber and fuel, to improve soil fertility and growing conditions, and to make their farms more diverse, productive, sustainable and resilient. MKEC also buys tree seedlings from the nurseries to replant and restore the Mount Kenya forest with the support of local schools (engaging children in learning and caring for trees), the Kenya Forest Service and the Community Forest Association. The forest is absolutely vital for the local climate and the rivers they rely on for water and irrigation. Income from the seedling sales enables the groups to run savings and loans schemes and provides vital support to help their members through hard times and enable them to invest in the future.
